CHRISTY LINTON ART
Christy Linton is a contemporary abstract painter with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design whose work is rooted in material, movement, light and emotion. Her early training in fashion shaped a deeply tactile approach to painting. Long before working on canvas, she was drawn not only to how fabric looked, but to how it felt, moved and responded to touch. That sensitivity to material continues to guide her studio practice today. Christy builds her paintings through layers of acrylic and mixed media, incorporating at different times mineral texture, acrylic inks, oil stick, charcoal, sand, plaster, netting, teabag papers and almost always oxidized metal leaf. She is especially drawn to the physical qualities of these materials and the delicacy of leaf between her fingers, the grains of sand, the transparency of paper and netting, and the unpredictable surfaces created through plaster, crackle and oxidation. Water, light, movement and fluidity are recurring influences throughout her work. Reflective and oxidized surfaces allow many of the paintings to shift throughout the day, responding to changing light and to the viewer’s movement through a space. Her interest in neuroaesthetics and the relationship between visual experience, emotion and the nervous system also informs the atmosphere she seeks to create. In a world that can feel increasingly uncertain, divided and overstimulating, Christy wants her paintings to offer something quieter: a sense of calm, connection, presence and flow. Ultimately, she wants the work to do more than occupy a wall. She wants a painting to change with the room and the light, while also changing how the room feels.
